Day 1 – Home to Virginia Beach, VA 

Today we fly to the sunshine of Cozy Coastal Virginia! Following an early evening arrival, we’ll check into our oceanfront accommodations at the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach Oceanside and prepare for a week of fun as we get to know Virginia Beach and Coastal Virginia! Virginia Beach lies where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. Settle into your oceanfront room, taking in the breathtaking view before you from your private oceanfront balcony! Be sure to stroll along the 3-mile boardwalk that stretches along the beach-lined oceanfront. This evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Hemingway’s, which offers a variety of options for all tastes.

Day 2 – Virginia Beach 

After breakfast at our hotel, a local guide joins us for a Virginia Beach Riding Tour. We’ll learn about the history of Virginia’s largest city and get the pulse on current day in Virginia Beach. Stop at the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, a National Historic Landmark that has guarded the mouth of the bay since 1792. Then we’ll visit the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center to experience coastal habitats from around the world. The aquarium includes thousands of animals, representing over 300 species. Lunch will be on your own in the Osprey Café. This afternoon, we’ll spend time on the water as we board a whale watching cruise. Look out for whales, bottlenose dolphins, seabirds and waterfowl! Then we’re off to one of Virginia Beach’s most prized attractions, the Military Aviation Museum, for a guided tour of one of the largest private collections of World War II and Korean War era aircraft in the world. Dinner will be served at the museum, and we’ll be entertained by a talented local musician.

Day 3 – Virginia Beach 

Following breakfast, we’ll spend the day exploring the sights of Hampton, Virginia, a nearby city on the sea and the birthplace of America’s space program. Visit the Virginia Air & Space Center to see interactive aviation exhibits spanning 100 years of flight, more than 30 historic aircraft, a hands-on space exploration gallery, unique space flight artifacts, and the Apollo 12 Command Module. Lunch will take place at the Grey Goose Café, an upscale casual restaurant featuring something for everyone. Then we’ll explore Fort Monroe, the largest stone fort surrounded by a moat, and the Casemate Museum, which tells the significant history of the fort. Upon returning to the hotel, dinner will be on your own this evening at your choice of restaurants along the Virginia Beach “strip” and adjacent boardwalk.

Day 4 – Virginia Beach 

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before we depart for downtown Norfolk, where we’ll learn the port city’s colorful history of over three centuries as we ride through its lovely historic district and restored areas. Our local guide will point out areas of interest along the way, like the stately homes along the Hague, old St. Paul’s Church, Moses Myers House, Chrysler Museum of Art, MacArthur Memorial, and the historic Freemason District. We’ll visit Nauticus, a marine and science center that explores the power of the sea with interactive exhibits. Connected to the museum is the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest and last battleships built by the U.S. Navy, which we can explore above and below deck. Lunch will be on your own inside the Nauticus Café. This afternoon we’ll board the Victory Rover cruising vessel for a two-hour tour of Norfolk’s Elizabeth River. The cruise features an up-close view of the Naval Base from the water and offers a wealth of information on the bustling port area. Dinner tonight will be in downtown Norfolk at Freemason Abbey, a tavern-style restaurant housed in a renovated 19th century church.

Day 5 – Virginia Beach 

After breakfast at our hotel, our local guide takes us to Virginia’s Historic Peninsula and Colonial Williamsburg. Along the way, we’ll will hear interesting and informative narration about the historic triangle and Coastal Virginia. Upon arrival in the charming town of Williamsburg, we will be transported back in time to meet tradespeople, shopkeepers, and others that call Williamsburg home. Explore historic 18th century buildings, engage our nation’s founders, and gain a new perspective on our American story. With so much to see and do, there is something for everyone – history lovers, makers, and fans of architecture. Experience a half-day touring this living museum, with an admission ticket providing entry into the many exhibition buildings, including the Capitol and the Governor’s Palace. Tour historic homes, public buildings, and 18th century craft shops where costumed hosts recreate the sights and sounds of America 200 years ago. In the afternoon, there’s free time for lunch on your own and shoping at the many unique specialty shops in Merchants Square. Enroute back to the hotel, a farewell dinner will be served at the Whaling Company, known for simply prepared seafood and land favorites in a comfortable environment.

Day 6 – Virginia Beach to Home 

Following breakfast, we’ll depart for the airport with fond memories of our time spent exploring the best of Coastal Virginia!
