Experience the famous Romantic Road of Germany today.  Drive to Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, for most, the quintessential town of the Romantic Road. Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber (literally, “the red castle on the Tauber”) is the kind of “gem like” medieval town, even Walt Disney might have thought too good to be true with gingerbread architecture galore and a wealth of fountains and flowers against a backdrop of towers and turrets.  Enjoy a walking tour of Rothenburg. Protected by its 13th and 14th century ramparts, the village commands the winding course of the Tauber River and is one of the oldest towns on the Romantic Road. The paved streets with their old signs wind their way through the medieval houses and fountains and suddenly plunge you into the atmosphere of the 16th century. Visit the St. James Church with its famous 16th century Reimenschneider altarpiece, known as the Altarpiece of the Holy Blood.  Just outside the church stands the Town Hall which was built in two periods. The gothic section with its gable topped by a belfry dates from the 14th century while the section facing the market square is done in Renaissance style. You will today have time to visit Kaethe Wohlfahrt’s shop in Herringasse. Weihnachtsdorf (Christmas village) is a wonderland of locally made toys and decorations and even in summer there are Christmas trees with brightly painted wood baubles. The rest of the day is free in Rothenburg.  R & J Tours has chosen the historic Hotel Eisenhut in the heart of Rothenburg.

DAY 5 – ROTHENBURG TO MUNICH
After breakfast, travel the Romantic Road. Pass Schillingsfuerst with its former royal palace of the princes of Hohenlohe, which can be seen from many miles away. Here the Romantic Road crosses the mountains of Frankenhoehe, the watershed between the romantic Woernitz and Tauber Rivers. Continue to Feuchtwangen, a tranquil village with the baroque Town Hall, spouting fountains and Collegiate Church on the market square. Pass the town of Dinkelsbuehl with its many towers, town walls and moat, mirrored dreamily in the green waters of the town moat. Every night a night watchman still goes his rounds.  Continue past the medieval town of Noerdlingen, a town still surveyed by a watchman from the top of the towers, encirceling the town along the perfectly preserved roofed parapet walks. The town of Harburg domiates the countryside with its overlooking fortress. The fortress was never captured and never destroyed and houses today are an outstanding art museum. The Romantic Road now crosses the foothills of the Jura mountains and reaches the Danube River. Pass the former free Imperial town of Donauwoerth with a history dating back about 1,000 years. Arrive in Augsburg, the oldest city on the Romantic Road, with a history dating back 2000 years.
