Historic Virginia in the Spring

1. Home to Virginia Beach
Today our group flies into our Nations Capital and drives through Virginia to our first destination of Virginia Beach. We will check into our ocean front hotel with ocean view rooms for a 3 night stay! Our evening meal will be at the Waterman’s Grille with wonderful ocean views as we dine.

2. Virginia Beach
After breakfast our local step on guide will meet us as we begin our day of touring. First stop is the Cape Henry Lighthouse and then on to First Landing, cross the first place where members of the Virginia Company landed. They went on to settle Jamestown. Our narrated drive will continue on to Norfolk where we will stop at the MacArthur Memorial before lunch. The afternoon will be filled with excitement as we tour Nauticus and the USS Wisconsin, one of the largest and last battleships built by the US Navy. Tonight our dinner will be at the Otani Japanese Steak House where the Japanese chefs will prepare our food in traditional style right before our eyes.

3. Virginia beach
After breakfast and time for a walk on the beach, we will go to the Oceana Naval Air Station where a retired pilot will lead our tour. See many of the jets the navy has used over many years of history and have an opportunity to get up close to these magnificent air machines. Our lunch will be in the Officer’s Club. This afternoon you have the option of enjoying time on the beach at the hotel and surrounding area or traveling with your tour director to the Mariner’s Museum home to the premier Civil War attraction in the country—The USS Monitor Center. Here you will see many artifacts from the Monitor and be able to walk on the deck of a full-scale replica of the USS Monitor.

4. Virginia Beach to Williamsburg
After you enjoy the sunrise from your oceanview room and a nourishing breakfast we will be joined by our step on guide as we travel to the Yorktown Victory Center. The decisive military campaign of the American Revolution culminated with the British surrender to combine American and French forces under the command of George Washington. The Siege of Yorktown effectively ended the six-year struggle of the Revolutionary War and set the stage for a new government and nation. The Yorktown Victory Center, a museum of the American Revolution, chronicles America’s evolution from colonial status to nationhood through a unique blend of timeline, film, thematic exhibits and outdoor living history. Continue on through a unique blend of timeline, film, thematic as we walk down the mainstreet of this 18th century town. We’ll experience the sights and sounds of a time when Thomas Jefferson and Patrick
Adams inspired the fight for Independence. Stop by a local pub or watch a craftsman. Travel to the Jamestown Settlement. Here, with the help of our guide, the story of the people who founded Jamestown and of the Virginia Indians they encountered is told through film, gallery exhibits, and living history.

5. Williamsburg
Tour Berkley Plantation, site of the first offical Thanksgiving. Visit Colonial Williamsburg and experience colonial life of the 1700’s as we tour the nearly 100 restored buildings and acres of gardens that comprise Colonial Williamsburg. Relive history as we listen to costumed guides share stories and see craftsmen display their tools and skills. Many colonial shops will give us an opportunity to dine and shop!

6. Williamsburg to Charlottesville
Enjoy a driving tour of Richmond rich in history of this capital city and travel by historic sites like: Monument Ave, Hollywood cemetery, St. John’s Church and the State’s Capital. Lunch today will be at historic Michie Tavern, a home huilt by Scotsman John Michie for his family. The home was later opened as an inn for the weary, hungry travelers like us! Travel through the beautiful countryside of Virginia on our way to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. We will enjoy a guided tour and spend time in the new visitor center. This evening enjoy a meal together.

7. Charlottesville to Fredricksburg
Tour Chancellorville Battlefield then travel to Fredricksburg for a tour of Kenmore Plantation. Built by George Washington’s sister, Betty Washington Lewis and her husband Fielding Lewis, this beautiful, Georgian-style mansion reflects the pre-Revolutionary War wealth and status of the Fredericksburg merchant. Enjoy a cruise in Fredicksburg. After lunch in Old Town Fredricksburg we tour the Mary Washington house. This house was purchased by George Washington for his mother Mary. Then it is on to Ferry Farm Plantation, the boyhood home of George Washington. It is here that if it really happened, young George would of chopped down the cherry tree.

8. Fredricksburg to Annapolis
Visit the The National Museum of the Marine Corps. Opened to the public on 13 November
2006, the National Museum of the Marine Corps is a lasting tribute to U.S. Marines — past, present, and future. Situated on a 135-acre site adjacent to the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, the Museum’s soaring design evokes the image of the flag-raisers of Iwo Jima. Lunch will be at the Mt Vernon Inn just adjacent to George Washington’s
Mt Vernon. Enjoy a tour of this mansion and a walk through the grounds with it’s wonderful view of the Potomac River.

9. Annapolis to home
Tour historic areas of Annapolis, with a long and illustrious maritime history and more 18th century buildings than any other town in the country and we will drive and walk amongst them. Tour the grounds of the US Naval Academy where we will tour the Chapel, and see the Crypt of John Paul Jones and the U.S. Naval Academy Museum. Fly home from Baltimore.
