“Home, home on the Range

Where the deer and the antelope play

Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word

For what can an antelope say…”

Well, maybe that’s not exactly how it goes, but we do know there will be no discouraging words from anywhere during this truly fascinating journey to the rangelands of North Dakota. Breathe deeply the cleanest air in America, travel off the beaten path and enjoy scenic byways, backways and legends of the Old West. There is mysterious beauty and adventure only found in these wide open rolling hills of legendary Western North Dakota!

Day 1 – Home to Bismarck, ND

We travel west today, gradually leaving the lakes and trees of Minnesota behind, making our way into the open vistas of the prairies of North Dakota. Our destination is Bismarck and the familiar comfort of the Country Inn & Suites. Our adventure starts with a peaceful cruise on the Missouri River aboard the Lewis & Clark Riverboat, enjoying great pizza as we take in the beauty of the evening.

Day 2 – Bismarck to Medora, ND

Hot breakfast is served at the hotel before we depart. We soon exit the freeway traveling the back roads of North Dakota to Beulah. We have the privilege of touring the Freedom Mine, aptly named to highlight the significant role it plays in securing America’s freedom from dependence on foreign energy sources. The Freedom Mine is America’s largest lignite coal mine. Following our tour, we enjoy a picnic lunch at Riverside Park in Beulah. Our next wonderful adventure is truly unique, fascinating, and amazing! For the past two decades, Gary Greff has been building the world’s largest metal sculptures along The Enchanted Highway, trying to lure travelers off the interstate to his hometown of Regent, North Dakota. We’ll not only travel the Enchanted Highway, but the creator himself, Gary, will board our coach and guide us along this incredible experience. Before arriving at our destination for the evening, we stop to take in the rugged beauty of the Badlands and the Painted Canyon. Our “home on the range” for the next three days is the Roughrider Hotel in the heart of historic Medora. This is luxury accommodations in a genuinely western setting and absolutely delightful. Day 3 – Medora

After a great Chuckwagon breakfast we set out to explore Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Find out why Teddy Roosevelt loved this region and helped to create a national park to preserve it. This vast North Dakota prairies, rivers, and badlands are home to a wide variety of native wildlife such as herds of bison, elk, bighorn sheep, bald and golden eagles, meadowlarks, burrowing owls, prairie dogs, and a large band of wild horses. During the summer months, bands of Mustangs may be seen grazing on the upland plateaus in the park, where they can enjoy the cooling winds and lush grasses. Today, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is one of the few areas in the West where free-roaming horses may be readily observed. There is nothing quite like the site of a stallion silhouetted high on a ridge protecting their herd! Spend some time this afternoon exploring the intriguing western hamlet of Medora with its unique shopping and seven great museums, including the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Chateau de Mores Historic Site. A one-hour performance of “Salute to Medora” provides entertaining insight into Medora’s colorful history. Theodore Roosevelt comes to life in this vivid new presentation. Learn about him as President, husband, father, soldier, and hunter. Much of this new show also focuses on Teddy’s time right here in the North Dakota Badlands. And now for the main event: The nationally acclaimed Pitchfork Steak Fondue is an absolute delight. Every evening chefs load steaks onto pitchforks and fondue them western style right before your eyes. Savor your steak as you overlook the picturesque Badlands from atop a bluff at the Tjaden Terrace. Your steak comes with all of the fixin’s. Plus, you’ll be serenaded with western melodies performed live by members of The Coal Diggers from the Medora Musical. Following dinner is the all new Medora Musical. Enjoy family entertainment while in the outdoor splendor of the North Dakota Badlands in the 2,852 seat Burning Hills Amphitheatre. This professionally produced, high energy, western style musical is proudly dedicated to the legacy of America’s 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, and the time he spent here in North Dakota’s Badlands. Each show pays tribute to American patriotism and the Old West. Audiences are treated to an exciting array of songs performed by the Burning Hills Singers and accompanied by the on-stage band, the Coal Diggers. The Medora Musical also features nationally known comedy and variety acts, live horses on stage and a gospel tribute.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4 – Medora

Another hearty Chuckwagon breakfast prepares us for our adventures today. Just a short drive west of Medora is Father Cassedy’s ranch for needy boys and girls, the nationally acclaimed Home on the Range. In a truly authentic setting we have the privilege of witnessing the ranch’s 58th Annual Champions Ride Saddle Bronc Rodeo. An exclusive tour of the Ranch, an on the grounds cowboy cookout lunch, and special reserved seating for the rodeo has all been arranged for our group. This will truly be an unequaled experience you will want to share with family and friends when you return. We return to Medora this afternoon to just relax, have dinner on our own, and enjoy time reflecting on all we “packed in” the last few days.
