This is a self-guided experience and gives a rare look into the lives and legacy of the Greatest Generation. We will stop at the Granite Run Golf Course Restaurant for a delicious lunch before we continue our journey west, stopping in Watertown, SD at The Redlin Art Center. This art gallery displays over 150 of artist Terry Redlin’s original paintings. After visiting we will travel to Sioux Falls, SD for the night.

Day 2 – Sioux Falls to Omaha, NE

After breakfast at our hotel, we will journey south to Omaha, NE. Enjoy the beautiful countryside as we make our way. Our first stop will be at Casio’s Steakhouse in Omaha for a delicious lunch. After lunch we will visit Freedom Park, home to the USS Hazard and the USS Marlin. The Hazard first served as an escort and later as a minesweeper. After being decommissioned in 1946 and struck from Navy records in 1971, it was purchased by a group of Omaha businessmen and placed on display in Freedom Park, the only Admirable class minesweeper left in the United States. The Marlin was one of the smallest operational submarines ever built for the Navy. Next on our itinerary is a visit to General Crook’s House. General Crook was the Commander of the Department of the Platte and moved his headquarters from downtown Omaha to Fort Omaha. This home was built in 1879 to be the residence of the Commander. We will check into our hotel for a relaxing evening with dinner on your own at a nearby restaurant.

We will have a guided tour of the museum which consists of several aircraft, exhibits, and space crafts. Lunch will be included at the Museum before we travel to Abilene, KS. In Abilene we will check into the hotel before having dinner at Brookville Hotel, which is not a hotel but a restaurant that specializes in family style chicken dinners. The Brookville Hotel traces its roots back to the 1870s, when the railroad spread their tracks out across the prairie to meet the expected rush of Longhorn cattle coming up from Texas along the Chisholm Trail. The “hotel” originated the famous “Family Style Chicken Dinners” in 1915.

Day 4 – Abilene to Independence, MO

Our day begins with breakfast at the hotel before departing for Dwight Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood home. The Eisenhower Presidential Library is home to a world-class research facility, located in Eisenhower’s hometown of Abilene, Kansas. We’ll explore the extraordinary life and legacy of the only 5-star General who became President of the United States. In addition, the Eisenhower Museum and Boyhood Home shows Ike’s boyhood years growing up in America’s heartland, his years as military leader, and his presidency. After lunch on your own in Abilene, we will travel to Topeka, KS for a visit to the Combat Air Museum. The Combat Air Museum has served as an educational institution and tourism destination for close to forty years. It is one of a handful of major aviation museums in the United States located on an active airfield. We may be treated to flying activities of Air Force fighter aircraft and Army helicopter operations. With the longest runway in the State of Kansas, large refueling tanker aircraft of the Kansas Air National Guard and army troop transports often fill the skies around the Museum.
