Are you thinking you would like to get away for a few days? We sure are!!

You can Color It! anyway you would like,

But we are going to Color It! North Shore!

Duluth and The North Shore are the perfect place for a colorful autumn getaway.

This is historically the prime time for fall colors along Lake Superior.

So…let’s go!!!

Split Rock Lighthouse

Split Rock Lighthouse operated from 1910 until 1969. The lighthouse commands a panoramic view of Lake Superior from the 130 foot cliff from which it stands on. The lighthouse was built after a 1905 fierce storm that sank one ship nearby and more than 30 others on Lake Superior. Superior is the most unpredictable, deepest and coldest of the Great Lakes. The inside of the lighthouse and all buildings are closed (except the foghorn house) due to pandemic restrictions but the grounds are open to explore and doesn’t detract from the stunning scenic views that are unparalleled!!

Canal Park

Canal Park is “the place to be” when in Duluth. It is a unique area sandwiched between the lake and the harbor with many restaurants, coffee shops, specialty and gift shops, museums and attractions. The Canal connects the lake to the harbor and is spanned by the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge. The best spot to watch the big ships come and go! It is fascinating to see them navigate the canal with only inches to spare on either side. You would swear when you see the ship approaching it is just too big to fit through the canal. Walk out to the lighthouse at the end of the pier and visit the Lake Superior Marine Museum, which is highly interesting and informative. You can see the schedule of when the ships will be arriving and departing.

Day 1 – Home to Duluth, MN

Travel north this morning among the stunning fall foliage to the beautiful city of Duluth and Lake Superior. Included lunch is at the one and only Grandma’s Saloon & Grill. We are privileged to experience an expert guided tour of Duluth. Experience panoramic views of the city and the harbor that welcomes ships from all over the world. Feel the “presence of the past” as we enjoy an enchanted tour of Historic Glensheen Mansion with all of its intriguing stories. Our home for the next two evenings is the lovely Inn on Lake Superior conveniently located in the heart of Canal Park. We have reserved all lakeside rooms just steps away from the iconic Duluth Lakeshore Boardwalk. From your private patio, you can watch ocean-going ships arriving and departing the harbor. Dinner is on your own this evening with many restaurant choices just across the street. Keep tuned in because there just might be a special surprise treat this evening!

Included Meals: Lunch

Hotel: Inn on Lake Superior (2 Nights)

Day 2 – North Shore

Be up by 7:00 and you can catch an amazing sight right from your window or patio. Sunrise over Lake Superior!! Scheduled for 7:14 this morning! Enjoy a bountiful breakfast at the hotel before our start to an adventurous day. We begin our breathtaking journey along Lake Shore Drive to Gooseberry Falls State Park. Walk along the stream, seeing the falls from many viewpoints. The visitors center here is very informative. Just up the road is Historic Split Rock Lighthouse. Pandemic restrictions have closed the visitors center and inside the lighthouse, but you can explore the grounds and get great views of this splendid treasure from every angle. What a beautiful sight! (You’ll be saying that all day long!) We continue our scenic drive along the North Shore all the way to Grand Marais. Its been named America’s Coolest Small Town and is basically one big resort. You’ll have ample time to explore this little gem and grab some lunch. Don’t miss the donut shop, gift shops, walk along the harbor and bask in the addictive atmosphere! Now it’s on to the Lutsen Mountains to see fall colors in all their grandeur as we ride the Summer Express Gondola to the top of Moose Mountain. An incredible panoramic view of autumn splendor set against the electric blue of Lake Superior unfolds before you! What a sight! Grab a treat at the Mountain Top Deli before we descend and make our way back along the lakeshore. No trip along the North Shore is complete without a stop at the Rustic Inn. Absolutely the world’s best pie (and selection) is here! A light lunch and of course PIE is on us before we journey on to our home at The Inn. This evening enjoy time on your own in Canal Park. Watch the great ships come into harbor, enjoy a stroll along the extensive shoreside boardwalk, visit the Marine Museum and don’t miss S’mores on the beach at the Inn.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Afternoon Lunch & Pie

Day 3 – Duluth to Home

Sunrise this morning: 7:16. Don’t miss it! After another great breakfast at The Inn, you’ll have a little more leisure time this morning before we begin the activities of the day. This morning you have an option: You can visit either the Great Lakes Aquarium or the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in the Historic Union Depot. At noon we board the Vista Star for a narrated cruise of the Duluth Harbor. Cruise right alongside some of the world’s largest ocean-going ships – right here in Minnesota – while we gaze at more of our north country fall splendor. A pizza lunch is served on board as we cruise. No journey home from Duluth is complete without a stop at Tobies Bakery in Hinckley.
