Then sit back and relax as we pass through Ohio Valley and arrive in Wheeling and unpack for the next 2 nights. This evening we will attend a fabulous tribute to The Highwaymen & Honky Tonk Angels at Wheeling’s Capitol Music Hall! Day 4 – Wheeling – Johnny Cash Prison Concert!

Enjoy breakfast before our full day of fun begins! First, we will tour the elegant 1846 Oglebay Mansion Museum, The Carriage House Glass Museum, and have lunch at Wilson Lodge. During our visit to the Lodge, the annual Oglebay Antique Show will be taking place for those that would like to browse. Today we are treated to a country music Double Feature! We begin at the Old West Virginia Penitentiary where we have a tribute show to Johnny Cash & June Carter and his Outlaw Prison Concerts. The song “Folsom Prison Blues,” recorded in 1955, was an instant hit and became very popular among inmates who wrote to Johnny. His famous live albums that were recorded at Folsom Prison (1968) and San Quentin (1969) are now classics. What is interesting and much less well-known, is that those were two of many, many prison concerts Cash played over the course of almost 30 years. His first Prison Concert was at Huntsville State Prison in 1957. Today’s tribute is in a prison that held over 2000 men in the 60’s. It will feature several songs by Johnny Cash such as “I Walk The Line,” “The Green, Green Grass of Home,” and “Orange Blossom Special” plus duets and accompaniment by his wife June Carter on such songs as “Jackson,” and “Ring of Fire.” The concert will be followed by a Costumed Convict & Cop Competition. If you choose to get in the spirit of the day and dress as though you are guards or guests, you are more than welcome to join in the fun! There will be several prizes awarded, the categories will be created spontaneously by our eccentric Warden who tries to maintain a strict, but happy discipline here at the Pen. Today’s show and the Costume Contest are produced in the renovated Machine Shop. We will drive through a high arched entrance under the North Guard Tower and into the yard. After the concert and costume competition we’ll get a kick out of The Jailbird Feast, a festive menu of fine food with fun names for our prison dinner! At the conclusion of our dinner, we will depart for the world-famous Capitol Theatre and another great show, the 86th Anniversary of The Wheeling Jamboree. It began in 1933 in the grand tradition of Barn Dance Radio Shows and is still known as “The World’s Original Wheeling Radio Jamboree.” It is one of the last remaining shows of its type, being second only to “Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry” in longevity. This evening’s show is, as always, a variety show with the house band, local and regional artists who precede the headliner, Marty Stuart. He is an American country music singer-songwriter, known for both his traditional style, and eclectic merging of rockabilly, honky tonk, and traditional country music. You’ll recognize several of his best songs, “Cry, Cry, Cry,” “Hillbilly Rock,” “This One’s Gonna Hurt You (For A Long, Long Time)” and “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin.” What a memorable day!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
