TOUR EXPANDED to include an extra day plus additional events!

 

Travel the world-renowned New River Train excursion through the beautiful New River Gorge in West Virginia. The “Grand Canyon of the East” is one of the newest national parklands.

 

Day 1 – Home to Bloomington

Travel to Bloomington for an overnight stay. Lunch is served at Burnstad’s Cafe today before we arrive at the hotel. Enjoy an evening at your leisure tonight.

Day 2 – Bloomington to Dayton, OH

After breakfast we make our way through Illinois and into Indiana.Lunch is included before we stop at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum for a fascinating tour of the timing-and-scoring suite in the Pagoda, the Media Center, Victory Podium, Gaseline Alley garage area, and the world-famous “Yard of Bricks” at the start/finish line. Our visit would not be complete without a ride around the Indy 500 track! Then we’ll cross into Ohio where we’ll enjoy an overnight in Dayton.

Day 3 – Dayton to Marietta, OH

Breakfast is served at the hotel, then we’ll depart for the National Museum of the U.S. Airforce. Be sure to have your walking shoes on as the museum is a 17 acre hanger! Among the highlights of our visit will be boarding JFK’s Air Force One in which his body was flown back from Dallas in. Have lunch on your own at the museum. Departing, beautiful fall foliage begins to unfold as we approach West Virginia. Sit back and take in the spectacular fall foliage of the Ohio River Valley as we travel to the river town of Marietta, located at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers.

Day 4 – Marietta to Huntingon, WV

This morning we will visit Fenton Glass, who at one point was the largest manufacturer of homemade colored glass in the United States. Today Fenton Glass specializes in handcrafted glass jewerly. Then we cross the Ohio River into West Virginia to Parkersburg to enjoy a sumptuous lunch at the historic Blennerhassett Hotel. We depart Parkersburg aboard an authentic sternwheeler, plying the waters of the Ohio to enjoy a guided tour of Blennerhassett Island. The tranquil island features a beautifully reconstructed 18th-century mansion and horse-drawn wagon rides. Our destination tonight will be Huntington, West Virginia.

Day 5 – Huntingon

Today we enjoy one of the most breathtaking autumn color rail journeys in the world. The New River Train is an annual autumn excursion aboard a rolling museum of classic restored passenger railroad cars. Our train will travel through the famous Grand Canyon of the East, the 65-mile long New River Gorge in all its fall splendor, where the sole vestiges of civilization are the old C & O railway track, the New River Bridge and the whitewater rafters on the river. At Hinton, we’ll enjoy the annual fall festival in this scenic mountain town. We’ll have lunch on our own and browse the arts and crafts street fair. Enjoy a Pullman Square dinner aboard the train as we wind our way through spectacular fall foliage! Return to Huntington for another evening.

Day 6 – Huntingon to Cincinnati, OH

After breakfast we make our way to exciting Cincinnati. Visit the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. We will also visit the two-story Greek Revival house where our 27th President, William Howard Taft, was born & raised. Check into the hotel to freshen up or take in some local sights before departing for our dinner. Cruise under the stars on the Ohio River and dine on a feast fit for an Admiral on the BB Riverboat.

Day 7 – Cincinnati to Rockford, IL

Rise and Shine! Have a hearty breakfast before heading north to Rockford. This evening join us for an outstanding farewell dinner with your traveling friends and family.

Day 8 – Rockford to Home

Travel home today with coffee stops and lunch along the way, recalling your New River Train memories with your new traveling friends.
