Day 2 – Amarillo
Breakfast is served at the hotel before we head to Trail Boss Ministry, which exists to share the love, joy, grace and fullness of life available through Jesus Christ. They minister to cowboys, ranching families, and the western heritage culture who are more comfortable in a saddle than in a pew. We’ll be privileged to attend their outdoor Cowboy Church service, with the Palo Duro Canyon as the breathtaking backdrop. “May the good Lord take a likin’ to ya!” We’ll also enjoy coffee & donuts and shopping in their General Store. Next, we’ll enjoy a visit to Creek House Honey Farm. The couple started out growing pumpkins over a decade ago when they were hit by the enticing idea to implement beehives into the mix to help with the pollination of their plants. Becoming more familiar with the matter, the Nesters developed a deep love for the practice. It didn’t take long for their apiary to develop into the full-blown beekeeping operation it is today, managing approximately 50 beehives during the year. A delightful lunch is served here at the farm before we experience a beehive tour. We’ll learn about the fascinating world of honeybees by participating in a hands-on tour that few people get to experience! This beehive tour includes a lesson about honeybees, a beehive inspection with a professional beekeeper, and honey tasting fresh from the hive! Discover how to suit up in protective gear, light a smoker, and get up close and personal with the bees as you watch them work in their hive. Experience the excitement as new bee babies are being born and watch as workers bring pollen in from the fields. As we leave, we’ll all have a better understanding of honeybees and why their survival is so important to our world! We’ll head a few miles west to the city of Canyon. Nestled in the middle of the Texas Panhandle, Canyon claims a rich history based in cattle and ranching, and a heritage rooted in the pioneer spirit of the West. Enjoy time for shopping in downtown Canyon this afternoon as well as viewing the impressive 47-foot cowboy statue, Tex Randall. Composed of concrete, steel and wire mesh, Tex’s original purpose was to advertise Wheeler’s Western Store. We’ll return to Amarillo for a free evening and dinner on your own.

Day 4 – Amarillo
After breakfast at the hotel, our first stop is the Texas Route 66 Visitor Center, located in the historic Myers Fried Chicken Restaurant. In the heyday of Route 66, Myers was open 24/7, 365 days a year to serve the travelers on this famous roadway. Enjoy watching the “Two for the Road” documentary that highlights the Texas Route 66 experience and viewing unique and original Route 66 memorabilia. Next, we’ll journey through history at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. As we approach the museum, we are greeted by beautiful, larger-than-life bronze statues of history-making American Quarter Horses. Stepping inside, the Grand Hall houses the legends of American Quarter Horse history: people and horses inducted into the American Quarter Horse HOF. Head to the Theater to watch a film about the breed and its roles in today’s world, from a work partner on the ranch to an athlete on the racetrack or in the show arena. The theater also displays a collection of Orren Mixer paintings. Mixer was once commissioned to paint the ideal American Quarter Horse and went on to produce portraits of many of the American Quarter Horses whose legacies live on in the HOF. In the Hall of Fame Exhibit, we’ll journey through a timeline of the history of the American Quarter Horse and view personal items from individuals such as Joe Kirk Fulton, the first Masked Rider mascot for Texas Tech University. Departing, lunch will be on your own before we make our way to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, proudly home to the largest collection of Texas history in the world! It all began in 1920, when an educator named Hattie Anderson moved to Canyon, Texas, to teach history at West Texas State Normal College. There she found a historian’s dream—a bustling city on the grow, full of eager young college students preparing to be teachers, and a significant number of the area’s original settlers still actively involved in ranching, farming, and business. Everywhere she looked, Hattie saw the living past. She was surrounded by the resources to preserve and record this history while those who had experienced it were still alive. Racing against time, she formulated a plan and organized the Panhandle- Plains Historical Society. They began soliciting support for their efforts to collect and preserve the human and natural history of the region, then the Great Depression hit in 1929. Undaunted, the historical society pressed on. They announced a capital campaign, and amazingly, the hard-working people of the Panhandle responded. From pennies to bricks, people gave whatever they could. Today, we get to experience the fruits of their dedication & labor! Later this afternoon, we will return to the hotel for some relax time and to freshen up. A special evening is ahead as we travel back to Palo Duro Canyon where we will first enjoy a tasty Chuckwagon BBQ dinner. While dinner is served, we’ll take in Prairie Dog Stage entertainment. Then its time for the main event: The TEXAS Outdoor Musical of Shakespeare in the Canyon! The beautiful Pioneer Amphitheater, carved out of and nestled into a natural basin in the majestic Palo Duro Canyon, sets a beautiful stage to hear the work of William Shakespeare, one of the greatest playwrights of all time. A lone horseman, carrying the flag of the great state of Texas appears atop a 600-foot cliff, signaling the beginning of this spectacular outdoor musical drama. With a moving swell of the music, the horseman gallops across the rim. Suddenly, a cast of more than 60 actors, singers and dancers take the stage. Set against an authentic tapestry of history, the show’s fictional characters bring to life the stories, struggles and triumphs of the settlers of the Texas Panhandle in the 1800’s. Song and dance abound – and a generous helping of good ol’ Texas humor too – with spellbinding lighting and special effects. This spectacular musical wraps up our tour perfectly of stepping in the Real Texas!
