Day 1 – Home to Lincoln, NH

After flying into Boston, we’ll be welcomed to New Hampshire, the “Granite State!” We will travel into the White Mountain National Forest where we will check into the Mountain Club on Loon. This beautiful resort, nestled at the base of Loon Mountain, will be our home for the next 4 nights! We’ll get to know one another as a delicious dinner is served at the resort this evening.

Included Meals: Dinner

Hotel: Mountain Club on Loon (4 Nights)

Day 2 – Lake Winnipesaukee

Breakfast is included this morning at the resort before our local guide meets us for a full day of touring. We begin by boarding the M/S Mount Washington, a first class, 230-foot excursion ship. Cruise the crystal-clear water of Lake Winnipesaukee located in the beautiful Lakes Region at the foothills of the White Mountains. Then we’ll have free time for lunch on your own and shopping in the delightful lakeside resort town of Wolfeboro. Afterwards, we’ll tour the Wright Museum, which focuses on the World War II years with war exhibits such as aircraft and tanks, as well as exhibits from everyday life during that time. In the late afternoon we’ll arrive in Meredith where we’ll climb aboard the Lake Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad to enjoy a casual New England Roast Turkey Dinner while railing along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. What a spectacular day experiencing the beauty of Lake Winnipesaukee by both cruise and rail – made even more breathtaking by the colorful fall foliage!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3 – Bethlehem & Bretton Woods

After breakfast at the resort, our local guide meets us for another full day of exploring. First we visit The Rocks in scenic Bethlehem, the northern headquarters for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. Housed in a 1906 building at The Rocks, their Maple Experience includes a visit to a working sugar house and an interactive museum with maple artifacts from the extensive collection of legendary sugar maker Charlie Steward. Stunning views of the White Mountains make this experience all the more memorable! Next, we are treated to an elegant buffet lunch at the magnificent Omni Mount Washington Hotel! We’ll also enjoy a self-guided tour of this historic hotel. The Omni’s ground was broken in 1900 and construction was completed in 1902. Two hundred and fifty Italian craftsman, skilled in masonry and woodworking, were brought to Bretton Woods and housed on the grounds. A favorite New England retreat of presidents, poets and celebrities; the hotel delights every sense with enchanting music, refined dining, and luxurious décor. The hotel has been host to countless celebrities, including Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth and three U.S. Presidents. Since we’re in maple syrup country, more maple syrup is in store with a visit to the authentic 1896 Fadden’s General Store. With an on-site maple sugar house, they are proud to be the 5-time winners of “Best Maple Syrup in New Hampshire!” This is definitely a great place to shop for maple sugar products. Then we arrive back at the hotel for a quick refresh before a wonderful evening rail experience aboard the Café Lafayette Dinner Train. Escape the ordinary with R&J as we relive the romance of dining on the rails. We’ll experience this while riding in one of three beautifully, restored Pullman dining cars, enjoying five courses of fine food served to us in the Grand European manner. As dinner is served, period music keeps time with the rail’s rhythmic rumbling, punctuated by the haunting wail of the engine whistle. With magnificent mountain vistas and lush New England forests surrounding The Café Lafayette Dinner Train, we are assured of having the best seat in the house, all evening long! After dinner, with the compartment lights down low and the dramatic sunset outside our windows, we may allow ourselves a wistful romantic journey back in time, wishing the evening would never end!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 – White Mountains

Our guide joins us again after breakfast. Today, we’ll tour across one of the most scenic routes in America, the Kancamagus Highway. Scenic stops will be made at Sugar Hill Overlook, Albany Covered Bridge and Rocky Gorge. Another rail adventure awaits as we board the world’s first mountain climbing cog railway to experience a scenic train ride to the Summit of Mount Washington, the Northeast’s Highest Peak! Powered by either steam or diesel, our round-trip cog ride takes approximately three hours, including about an hour stop at the summit. (Tip: Bring a jacket or sweater but remember that some of the cog trains are fired by coal, so plan accordingly.) A box lunch is included at the Cog along with time to visit their gift shop. Then we continue touring through the White Mountains, viewing the best of New Hampshire’s fall foliage, with photo opportunities at scenic vistas. We’ll travel through the notches cut from the glaciers and enjoy the scenic nature of New Hampshire. Our guide is well versed in the history, geology, and lore of the area, imparting these fascinating details to us as we travel from place to place today. Tonight, dinner is served at a local restaurant.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 – Lincoln to Sturbridge, MA

Savor one last New Hampshire mountain breakfast before we depart. All aboard the Fall Foliage Special Train! This train travels north from Meredith, railing by lakes Waukewan & Winona and along the Pemigewasset River, to Plymouth. Disembarking, we’re guests at the Common Man Inn for a hot buffet luncheon. On the return trip, we will be greeted by members of the Ashland Historical Society as we tour the restored Ashland Railroad Station. After arriving back at the Meredith Station in the midafternoon, our coach takes us south to Massachusetts, the “Bay State.” We’ll check into the Comfort Inn in Sturbridge for the night before we’re guests at the Historic Salem Cross Inn. Let the Fireplace Feast begin! Relax by the fieldstone fireplace as the crackling fire roasts our prime rib “to a turn” by rotating it slowly over a crackling fire of wild cherry logs. This jack is the only known 1700’s antique roasting jack that was used to roast fowl and beef in New England that is still in use. The flavor of the fireplace roasted prime rib is unsurpassed. Beware the brimming bowl of freshly whipped cream – the perfect complement to New England’s Best Apple Pie served from an antique wooden bowl!
