Day 2 – Dubuque – Cruising to Rock Island, IL
Our excitement for the day builds as we enjoy breakfast at the hotel. First we will visit the beautiful Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, a nonprofit organization, that was established in 1980. The 57-acre campus is maintained 100% by volunteers. Their labor of love has created a living museum that symbolizes devotion to the growing things of the earth. Their mission is to establish, preserve, and maintain a place that is a source of information, education, culture, and beauty for all. Then we will spend a special day aboard the Riverboat Twilight. This all-day cruise heads south from Dubuque, allowing us to experience towering bluffs, two Locks & Dams, and quaint river towns along the beautiful Mississippi River. Our cruise includes a full lunch, snacks, and dinner as well as historical narration by our captain who has been piloting riverboats for 30 years on the Upper Mississippi River. Anticipate great scenery, eagles and other migratory birds, more relaxation than you have allowed yourself in years, plus live entertainment! With plenty of indoor & outdoor seating, settle into a sturdy teak rocker or an inviting deck chair & enjoy!
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hotel: Stoney Creek
Day 3 – Rock Island to Fort Atkinson, WI
Enjoy an included full breakfast at the hotel before we make our way to the John Deere Pavilion to learn about the history of John Deere and farming along the river & around the world. Next we’ll visit the Rock Island Arsenal, which is the Army’s second oldest museum. Then we’ll cut northeast across Illinois and into Wisconsin. Mid-afternoon we will check into the Holiday Inn Express in Ft. Atkinson and enjoy their Welcome Reception. Then after freshening up, get ready for a wonderful buffet dinner and show at the Fireside Dinner Theatre. Prepare yourselves for some laughs as we’re seeing The Church Basement Ladies in “The Last Potluck Supper!” It is 1979, the day of the church’s Centennial Celebration, and past parishioners have gathered to share hotdish, bars, and stories from the last 100 years. As the women work in the kitchen, shared memories burst into life through a series of flashbacks. Travel back to 1897 and meet Vivian’s grandmother; see Karin as a newlywed cautiously navigating the politics of the kitchen; and be there in 1944 when Mavis first barreled her way through the door. The Centennial Celebration is bittersweet. Times are tough in this small farm community, and hard decisions will have to be made.
