Day 1 – Home to Fairbanks, AK

Welcome to Fairbanks, Alaska’s largest interior city! Once our evening flight arrives, we will check into our hotel for a wonderful 3 nights stay.

Hotel: Pike’s Waterfront Lodge or similar (3 Nights)

 

Day 2 – Fairbanks

This morning we’ll visit Gold Dredge 8 to experience real Alaska gold panning, plus take home the gold you find. Then we’ll stop at the Trans Alaska Pipeline to see a portion of the 800-mile long system. Afterwards, we’ll board the sternwheeler “Discovery” for a riverboat cruise along the scenic Chena and Tanana Rivers. We’ll hear native guides share their unique culture and traditions at a recreated Athabascan Indian Camp. This evening we will enjoy a true Alaskan culinary experience with a Salmon Bake!

Day 3 – Fairbanks

Our day starts with a city tour of Fairbanks, including a visit to the Morris Thompson Visitor Center to learn about the history of Alaska. Next we’ll visit the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, which showcases wardrobes and vehicles from years past. Step back into an amazing time in history with a world class collection of vintage automobiles. Then it’s time to head to North Pole, Alaska, where “the spirit of Christmas lives year-round!”

Day 4 – Fairbanks to Dawson City, YT

Today we’ll board our coach for a full day of travel to Dawson City. Along the way, we’ll visit the Delta Junction Visitor Center, where the Alaska Highway and Richardson Highway meet. Our drive will take us along roads less traveled and ripe for great photographs. A fun stop is planned in Chicken, Alaska, once a gold mining community. Then we head north on the “Top of the World Highway,” continuing on Taylor Highway to Dawson City. Welcome to the Yukon! Dawson City was once referred to as “Paris of the North” as its name is synonymous with the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. We will check into our hotel for a 2 night stay. (*Today requires a valid passport or enhanced driver’s license to cross border.)

Day 5 – Dawson City

First we’ll enjoy a tour of Dawson City to take in the sights and sounds of this unique town. Then we’ll visit a local gold dredge and learn about dredging in the Yukon and the gold rush. Next we’ll stop at the Discovery Claim, site of Bonanza Creek, where in 1896 prospectors found the first piece of gold in the Yukon. Afterwards, we’ll take in the entertainment at Gertie’s Saloon, where Diamond Tooth Gertie will dazzle us with her wit, charm and powerhouse vocals!

Day 6 – Dawson City to Whitehorse, YT

Today we’ll travel along the famous North Klondike Highway through the beautiful Yukon Territory. We will make stops along the way to take photos of the spectacular wilderness. Arriving in Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon and the largest city in Northern Canada, it is here that the largest gold rush in history exploded over 100 years ago, attracting thousands of goldminers searching for riches.

Day 7 – Whitehorse to Skagway to Whitehorse

Winding through beautiful alpine valleys and along the “Windy Arm” of Tagish, we’ll view lovely Bennett and Tutshi Lakes. In Fraser, we’ll board the vintage White Pass & Yukon Railroad for a thrilling journey along the route of the Klondike Gold Rush. This eye-opening rail excursion will be among the highlights of our vacation as our parlor car winds us through spectacular scenery on a narrow-gauge railway. View Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point and Dead Horse Gulch. Our train journey ends in Skagway, a frontier Gay Nineties town, which was the gateway to the Yukon during the Gold Rush of 1898. There will be time to explore Skagway before we board our coach and travel to Whitehorse for the evening.

Day 8 – Whitehorse to Haines, AK

Traveling along the Alaska Highway, we’ll make our way back into Alaska. We’ll be captivated by Kluane National Park and Reserve, which covers more than 20,000 square kilometers of breathtaking Canadian mountain wilderness. Our travels take us alongside the edge of this majestic and vast landscape. We’ll stop in Haines Junction to explore the Visitor Center and learn about this area. Then we’ll travel on scenic Haines Road, which leads from the highest mountains in Canada to the ocean port of Haines, Alaska. We’ll enjoy an overnight in quiet and authentic Haines.

Day 9 – Haines to Juneau, AK

Today we’ll visit the Chilkat Eagle Preserve by a float raft on the peaceful Chilkat River, which offers spectacular views of the Chilkat mountains. As we float along, have your cameras handy and be sure to scan the trees for majestic bald eagles, while keeping an eye out for wildlife that prowl the riverbank! We’ll thoroughly enjoy a picnic lunch in this wilderness setting. This afternoon we are in for a real treat as we board a private catamaran cruise that will take us along the Inside Passage. This will allow an up close and personal experience as an on-board naturalist guide helps us identify wildlife. As we cruise, we’ll continue enjoying the passing scenery, stopping for wild and marine life! Our cruise takes us through the breathtaking Lynn Canal, the longest and deepest fjord in North America. We’ll disembark in Auke Bay and travel to Juneau, Alaska’s capital. Our hotel is the historic Baranof Hotel located in the charming downtown.

Day 10 – Juneau

Accessible only by water or by air, Juneau is America’s most remote capital city. Today, a full day of adventure awaits us! This morning we will visit the salmon hatchery at the Ladd Macaulay Visitor Center to learn about the fascinating life cycle of salmon. Then we will take in a one-of-a-kind outdoor experience, the Glacier Gardens Rainforest. We’ll enjoy visiting this 50 acre botanical garden, right in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. After time for lunch in downtown Juneau, we will make our way to Mendenhall Glacier National Park. Along the way, we will discover Juneau’s fascinating Gold Rush history and the story of founder Joe Juneau as we journey along the scenic Gastineau Channel and past the Mendenhall Tidelands, culminating with breathtaking views of the 13 miles of brilliant blue ice beneath the rugged peaks of the Mendenhall Towers! Taking in the beauty of Mendenhall Glacier, it’s the perfect way to end the day and our Alaskan & Yukon adventure. This evening we bid Alaska good-bye as we board our overnight flight home.

Day 11 – Arrive Home

This morning we arrive home with fond memories of our Alaska’s Northern Inside Passage with Yukon & Fairbanks journey!
