Day 1 – Home to Romeoville, IL

A travel day across Wisconsin and Illinois to our first night’s stay in Bolingbrook. Enjoy an included meal at the famous “White Fence Farm.”

Day 2 – Romeoville to North Youngstown, OH

Enjoy the landscapes of northern Indiana and Ohio before spending the second night of travel at the Hampton Inn in Youngstown. Enjoy a great meal this evening at Station Square Italian Restorante.

Day 3 – North Youngstown to Dubois, PA

Following breakfast at the hotel, we begin our Pennsylvania back roads adventure as we journey to historic Sharon, PA and tour Reyers, the world’s largest shoe store. We motor on to New Wilmington and Volant, very quaint early American settlements with many unique shops and restaurants. Then we travel again down the beautiful backroads, along the Allegheny River, and through the Allegheny Forests. Tonight we stop to rest in DuBois and enjoy an included dinner at Fort Worth Restaurant.

Day 4 – DuBois to Bird In Hand, PA

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel we continue our back roads venture to Punxsutawney. There we meet Phil, the groundhog, and see where Groundhog Day got its start. On to Altoona and lunch on our own before observing Horseshoe Curve, this railroad marvel billed the “Eighth Wonder of the World.“ We travel many miles through peaceful river valleys and across the awesome Allegheny Mountains, entering the beautiful Pennsylvania Dutch area, and arriving at the elegant Amish View Inn, our home for the next three nights in Lancaster County. We will be treated to a traditional family style meal at Plain & Fancy Farm Restaurant.

Day 5 – Lancaster County

Relax this morning as we enjoy breakfast at the Inn, overlooking the peaceful Amish farmland, before we depart for our nostalgic ride on the Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad. We will travel in style in 1920’s vintage coaches. We then head to Hershey for a sweet tour of the chocolate factory where the streetlights are made like Candy Kisses. Next our trip to the World Class Auto & Bus Museum will be fascinating! It features automobiles from eight decades of time traveling from New York to San Francisco. Also featured is the largest number of vintage buses in the country under one roof. Dinner tonight will be at the famous, award-winning Miller’s Smorgasbord before returning to our hotel for the evening.

Day 6 – Lancaster County

This morning, after our delicious breakfast, we welcome on-board a local guide who will show us “up close and personal” the Amish people and lifestyle. We will visit the Amish Country Homestead, entering right into a personal Amish home. Then we are off for an informative tour of the Amish farmlands. Next we will head over to Kitchen Kettle, a village of 42 restaurants and shops, enjoying lunch on our own. After lunch, you will enjoy the Amish Experience Theatre and an Amish buggy ride. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure to explore the gorgeous grounds of the Amish View Inn. A special dinner is planned.

Day 7 – Amish View Inn to Gettysburg

After our included breakfast at the hotel, we head to Gettysburg. After an included picnic lunch we are off to the new state-of-the-art National Battlefield visitor’s center at Gettysburg where Civil War history comes alive. The museum built just a few years ago is spectacular, with many displays and artifacts that will keep your interest for hours! A special movie and their famous Cyclorama depicting Picket’s Charge are highlights. Next is a professionally guided Gettysburg Battlefield Tour. We will dine this evening at the historic 1776 Dobbin House Tavern, Gettysburg’s oldest and most historic house.

Day 8 – Gettysburg to Youngstown, OH

We will take off after breakfast for our beautiful trip across the backroads and view some of the most awesome scenery in America! We arrive at Old Bedford Village where we observe history surrounded by over 40 log & stone buildings. Truly a fascinating village “just the way it used to be!” Departing Old Bedford we enjoy more Pennsylvania scenic wonders while we make our way to Shanksville. It will be an awesome memory to view the Flight 93 National Memorial. We will ponder the stillness of those moments as we travel to the Hampton Inn in Youngstown.

Day 9 – Youngstown to St. Charles, IL

Today will be a travel day stopping only for rest stops and to take in nourishment. Our hotel this evening is the Hampton Inn in St. Charles. Enjoy a farewell dinner with your new friends.

Day 10 – St. Charles to Home

Following breakfast we depart for Home Sweet Home, enjoying our time with our newfound friends. Lunch is served at The Old Feed Mill in Mazomanie, a truly warm & rustic environment with country cuisine. Arrive home with cherished memories of the Backroads of Pennsylvania with R&J Tours!
