Day 1 – Home to Bretton Woods, NH

Our flight takes us to Boston – welcome to one of the oldest cities in the United States! As the largest city in New England, Boston is regarded as the unofficial “Capital of New England” for its economic and cultural impact on the entire New England region. We’ll then make our way to New Hampshire, the “Granite State.” Traveling through New Hampshire’s woods, we’ll arrive in the picturesque White Mountain National Forest for three wonderful nights at the stunning Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH. “Ground was broken in 1900 and construction was completed in 1902. Two hundred and fifty Italian craftsmen, skilled in masonry and woodworking, were brought to Bretton Woods and housed on the grounds…A favorite New England retreat of presidents, poets and celebrities; the hotel delights every sense with enchanting music, refined dining and luxurious décor. The hotel has been host to countless celebrities, including Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth and three U.S. Presidents.” This afternoon be sure to enjoy a self-guided tour of this historic hotel! Dinner is served in the resort’s elegant 1902 Main Dining Room this evening. After dinner, you may wish to take a moonlit stroll on the expansive veranda.

Day 2 – Bretton Woods

Breakfast is included this morning at our resort. Then we’ll meet our local guide for a fantastic day of touring. First, we’ll see the field of lupines. Paying homage to the annual blossoming of this captivating wildflower, the Fields of Lupine Blooming is a time-honored regional event. The brilliant spikes of the lupine flower carpet local fields and pastures in a rolling sea of vibrant purples, pinks, blues and whites. The long-lasting blossoms attract equally dazzling butterflies and create a breathtaking floral display against the majestic backdrop of the Franconia, Presidential, and Kinsman Mountain ranges. Our guide will stop at several places where the lupines are known to bloom so we can take pictures. Next, we’ll visit a Christmas tree farm and take a horse-drawn wagon ride through the Christmas tree fields! We’ll learn all about the farm as well as tree farming. Lunch is included at a local restaurant before we tour through the scenic White Mountains of New Hampshire. In Franconia Notch State Park, we’ll take a short walk to see a geological wonder – the Basin, a large granite pothole that was created by a glacier. We’ll also enjoy a stop at the Franconia Notch Visitor Center. After arriving back at the resort in the late afternoon, dinner and the evening are on your own in our spectacular surroundings.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3 – Bretton Woods

Enjoy breakfast at your leisure at the resort before we’re off with our local guide for day of adventures. First, we’ll board the world’s first mountain climbing cog railway to experience a scenic train ride to the Summit of Mount Washington, the Northeast’s Highest Peak! Powered by either steam or diesel, our round-trip cog ride takes approximately three hours, including about an hour stop at the summit. (Tip: Bring a jacket or sweater but remember that some of the cog trains are fired by coal, so plan accordingly.) A box lunch is included at the Cog along with time to visit their gift shop. Mid-afternoon we’ll return to the resort for free time to relax and enjoy all the great amenities. Perhaps playing a round of golf (at your own expense) on one of the resort’s championship courses is on your bucket list for this afternoon. Or maybe you wish to soak in the indoor or outdoor pool. Then we’ll fuel up with a tasty buffet dinner at the resort, preparing us for another grand adventure! We are heading out on an evening moose tour with a local guide! Truly a special part of our New England experience to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat on an extended riding tour. We won’t mind if we get back late, this moose experience is well worth it!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 – Bretton Woods to Sturbridge, MA

We will savor one last breakfast at the spectacular Omni Mount Washington Resort before we head south to Squam Lake, where On Golden Pond was filmed more than 40 years ago. As we cruise this beautiful lake, we’ll discover Squam Lake’s natural and cultural history as well as observe loons and bald eagles’ beauty and see them in their natural habitat. After our cruise, we’ll walk along a 3/4-mile self-guided trail that winds through forest and field, & past streams and ponds. Observe native New Hampshire wildlife like black bears, bobcats, mountain lions, river otters, and more that are housed in woodland enclosures along the trail. Lunch is included at a local restaurant before we continue south into Massachusetts, the “Bay State.” We’ll make our way to Sturbridge, Massachusetts and check into the Publick House Historic Inn’s Tillyer House for a special one-night stay. Did you know that the Publick House’s original founder, Colonel Ebenezer Crafts, was a revolutionary war hero? Our unique dinner experience is in West Brookfield at the historical Salem Cross Inn. Let the Fireplace Feast begin! Relax by the fieldstone fireplace as the crackling fire roasts your prime rib “to a turn” by rotating it slowly over a crackling fire of wild cherry logs. This jack is the only known 1700’s antique roasting jack that was used to roast fowl and beef in New England that is still in use. The flavor of the fireplace roasted prime rib is unsurpassed. Beware the brimming bowl of freshly whipped cream – the perfect complement to New England’s Best Apple Pie served from an antique wooden bowl!
