Day 1 – Overnight Flight to Vienna 

Our flight to Austria departs today. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your comfortable jet aircraft as we begin our journey! An R&J Tour Director is there to assist you throughout the tour. 

 

Day 2 – Arrive Vienna 

Welcome to Austria! Our local guide will meet us in the city center as we enjoy an evening walking tour of Vienna and pass by its Gothic cathedral, cobbled streets and impressive Imperial buildings. This evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 – Vienna 

After breakfast we will enjoy touring the Baroque-style architecture of the Belvedere Palace. Once the summer residence of Prince Eugene, the Belvedere now houses the most valuable art collections of 800 years. Later we will visit the famous Schonbrunn Palace. From a hunting lodge to a summer residence, you will learn about the fascinating history of which began in the Middle Ages. After a fine dinner at the palace and as a crowning glory, we will be entertained by the classical sounds of Mozart and Strauss in the Orangery.

Day 4 – Vienna to Salzburg 

After breakfast we will depart Vienna for the city of the Sound of Music, Salzburg. Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, is situated only a few miles from the German border. We tour Salzburg with a stop at the Mirabell Gardens, created in the beginning of the 18th Century. Admire the many statues, the pools adorned with sculptures and flowers, and the beautiful rose gardens. We’ll proceed on walking tour to the romantic Old Town nestled between the left bank of the Salzach River and the town’s huge Moenchsberg (Monk’s Hill). We’ll stroll along Getreidegasse and visit Mozart’s house. Here we will see his original musical instruments and manuscripts. Continue along picturesque Getreidegasse, with its wrought iron signs, and arrive at the great Festival Hall. Our next stop will be the Cathedral, with the biggest organ in Austria. Across Cathedral Square is the Residence, built between 1596 and 1619. After sometime to freshen up we will embark on a fun filled evening as we tour the Stiegl-Brauwelt Brewery. Learn about the largest private brewery in Salzburg that began in 1492 and enjoy Austria delicacies for our evening meal.

Day 5 – Salzburg to Lucerne 

Leave Salzburg and drive through scenic Austrian countryside along the peaks of Hahnenkamm and Kitzbuehler Horn. We’ll proceed to nearby Innsbruck, capital of Tyrol, in the heart of the Alps where we will have some time in one of the loveliest of Alpine cities. In a valley hemmed in by peaks, see the splendid Maria Theresiastrasse, the famous Golden Roof House and the Old Town. Proceed through glorious alpine scenery continuing on to the small principality of Liechtenstein and continue to wonderful Switzerland. It soon becomes apparent why everyone loves Switzerland. Arrive in Lucerne where we will enjoy dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 6 – Lucerne to Interlaken/Grindelwald 

During your morning at leisure you could take in the Kapell Bridge, the 14th-century wooden bridge, beautifully decorated with murals. On the riverbanks of the old town, see many patrician houses lining cobblestoned streets and tiny squares with pretty fountains. Or perhaps you would like to visit the Cathedral and continue to the famous Lion Monument, which commemorates the Swiss Guards of Louis XVI. This afternoon we will travel to the mountainous Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland. We will stay tonight in the typical Swiss mountain resort of Grindelwald. This evening enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 7 – Jungfraujoch – “Top of Europe” 

Today will be an incredible journey to Europe’s highest mountain railway station (11,333 ft), Jungfraujoch. We will take a cogwheel train in the Alps above Interlaken where Switzerland is at its most beautiful as we stand at the “Top of Europe”. Enjoy some time at the top and take in the magnificent views of Alpine peaks, glaciers, and valleys!

Day 8 – Grindelwald to Strasbourg 

We wave goodbye to Switzerland and say bonjour to France! We weave our way through the Swiss countryside and arrive at the other side of the Alps in France. This afternoon we will enjoy a walking tour of Strasbourg. Located in the Alsace region Strasbourg is the formal seat of the European Parliament and being so close to the German border blends French and German cultures in a unique way. This afternoon you can take in the sites at a leisurely pace on our Sightseeing cruise on the Rhine. This evening you are free to choose the cuisine of your liking.

Day 9 – Strasbourg to Heidelberg 

Continue our travels, this time to Germany, through the Black Forest with rolling hills, magnificent mountains, and pristine old forests, truly a national treasure. We arrive in Heidelberg, the oldest university town in Germany and the heart of German Romantic Literature. Enjoy time exploring the world’s most famous ruins and a landmark of Germany, the Heidelberg Castle. The castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. We’ll have time to visit the beautiful castle courtyard, the world’s largest wine barrel and the Apothecary Museum. Be sure to wander through the rooms including a complete pharmacists’ office and a laboratory with the scents of menthol in the air. This evening enjoy dining together at the hotel.

Day 10 – Rhine River Valley 

Visit fairy-tale towns like Rudesheim am Rhein. The Rhine River Valley has some of the finest vineyards in all of Europe. Visit a winery and enjoy a wine tasting and light lunch. Enjoy spotting many castles of the region.

Day 11 – Heidelberg to Munich 

This morning after breakfast we will make our way to the Munich, stopping off at Stuttgart for some time at leisure to admire the city packed with modern and historic buildings, home to good food, beer and Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. We then arrive in the heart of Munich for a relaxing two-night stay. Dinner this evening will be enjoyed together at the hotel.

Day 12 – Munich 

Enjoy a sightseeing tour of this charming city with a drive along Leopoldstrasse, the main street, into the Schwabing Quarter. The many terrace cafes contribute to the excitement that makes this one of the top entertainment centers in Germany. Later we’ll visit the Nymphenburg Palace, the former summer residence of the Bavarian rulers. See the magnificent carriages of the Marstall Museum and the Noble Halls. Continue to the gothic Old Town Hall with its stepped gables crowned by bell turrets. See the New Town Hall with its famous carillon (Glockenspiel), the largest in Germany. Lunch and the afternoon will be at your leisure. In the evening visit Oktoberfest at one of the famous beer-halls where we will have a traditional German dinner.

Day 13 – Munich to United States 

All too soon, our vacation has come to an end. We’ll fly across the Atlantic Ocean back to the United States. Return home with newfound friends and rich memories!
