Day 4 – Thessaloniki to Kalambaka

After breakfast, we depart for Veroia, a comfortable one-hour drive west. Enroute, we stop at what is perhaps the most fascinating museum in Greece: Vergina, ancient Aigai, the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom. Here, beneath a tumulus (burial mound), archaeologists discovered the Royal Tombs, including the magnificent tomb believed to belong to King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The underground museum preserves the tombs exactly as they were found, displaying extraordinary treasures such as golden wreaths, weapons, wall paintings, and the famous golden larnax bearing the Macedonian star. The atmosphere is both dramatic and deeply moving, offering a powerful glimpse into ancient Macedonia’s royal past. We then continue to Veroia, where the Apostle Paul arrived after fleeing Thessaloniki due to persecution. In the town center, we visit the Apostle Paul Monument, marking the spot where he is believed to have preached to the Bereans. Veroia is also renowned for its remarkable collection of old Byzantine churches, many dating from the 11th to 14th centuries. As we walk through its charming historic quarter, we admire beautifully preserved frescoes, stone architecture, and the spiritual heritage that has earned Veroia the title of a “Little Jerusalem” of the Balkans. After lunch, we continue south toward Kastraki, a picturesque village nestled at the foot of the majestic Meteora rock formations. The drive takes approximately 2 ••• hours, offering beautiful views of the Greek countryside along the way. Arriving at our centrally located hotel in Kalambaka, you may choose to do some shopping or have a light dinner on your own.

Included Meals: Breakfast

Hotel: Orfeas Hotel

Day 5 – Kalambaka to Delphi

Meteora means “rocks in the air,” and it is a complex of sandstone cliffs formed under the sea many years ago. These fascinating formations, sculpted throughout history, were exposed as the sea level dropped. The monasteries we will visit are built on these rocks. After lunch, we will head down south towards Delphi. It is the site of the famous Oracle of Delphi, where the conical stone Omphalos (navel), which marked the center of the world, was located. Delphi was a sacred precinct, dedicated mainly to the god Apollo, and became the most influential religious center of ancient Greece. After checking into our hotel, have a free evening for dinner on your own in town.

We continue to the celebrated Nemea wine region, the largest single vineyard zone in Greece and a distinguished Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) area.
